Dr. David Birchfield :: Chief Executive Officer and Chief Technology Officer
Dr. David Birchfield is the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Technology Officer. He has led the SMALLab research and development effort since 2005. In that role he has managed a multi-million dollar budget, working with government agencies, foundations, industry partners, schools, and museums.
Dr. Birchfield received his Doctorate in Music from Columbia University. He has a background in digital media and performance. His research focuses on real-time interactivity and experiential media system design as applied to creative and educational spaces. This work includes K-12 learning, games, interface design and generative mechanisms for media.
Dr. Mina Johnson-Glenberg :: Chief Learning Officer
Dr. Johnson-Glenberg is the Chief Learning Officer. She has received four SBIR grants and served for eight years as the President and CEO of the NeuronFarm, LLC, an educational software company. She has served on several entrepreneurship panels and mentored students at The Weinert Center at the University of Wisconsin School of Business.
Dr. Johnson-Glenberg received her PhD in Cognitive Psychology from the University of Colorado at Boulder. She has published on intellectual disabilities, neural networks, and text comprehension. Her recent research includes heading up assessment and interaction design. She is also a faculty member in the School of Arts, Media and Engineering at Arizona State University where she teaches courses like, "The Psychology of e-Learning and Gaming".
Scott Wallace :: Chief Operating Officer
Scott Wallace is the Chief Operating Officer. He is a successful K-12 technology entrepreneur and has extensive experience in working with K-12 public school districts in the areas of leadership development, school culture and organizational effectiveness. Mr. Wallace was formerly with eSchool Solutions in several executive posts including Senior Vice President of Sales & Marketing. At eSchool Solutions he led all field operations including sales, marketing, consulting, training and systems implementation.
Prior to eSchool Solutions, Mr. Wallace founded an educational technology company in 1999 that was focused on developing content-rich, data-rich web publishing platforms for schools and school districts. This company was acquired by eSchool Solutions in 2000. Previously he worked as a senior consultant with Deloitte Consulting where he worked with Fortune 1000 clients across a range of industry segments. He is currently Executive Director of the National Center for School Leadership. Mr. Wallace holds a B.S. degree from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and an MBA from the University of Chicago.
Dr. Colleen Megowan-Romanowicz :: STEM Content & Professional Development Lead
Dr. Colleen Megowan-Romanowicz is Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Subject Matter Expert and "nerd-whisperer" for SMALLab Learning. With over 20 years experience as a secondary science and mathematics educator, she bridges the divides between research, classroom teaching practice and digital media programming.
Megowan-Romanowicz earned her PhD in Physics Education Research at Arizona State University. Her research interest is in distributed, representationally-mediated and embodied cognition. She has worked closely with the SMALLab research team since 2007 and is currently studying the role of embodiment in physics learning. She has directed two NSF grant projects and authored a successful NSF proposal in the area of STEM teacher education.
Cyndi Boyd :: Account Manager
Cyndi Boyd is an Account Manager. She has 18 years of experience involved with management of operations, sales & marketing, and customer service. She holds an MBA with a specialization in entrepreneurship and a particular interest in working with children, enhancing their learning capabilities through technology and interactive learning experiences to build critical thinking skills.
Tim Lang :: Game Developer
Tim Lang is a 15 year veteran in game development. His main focus has been to develop fun and entertaining interactions for video game players. He has worked on many block buster game franchises, including the acclaimed Might and Magic franchise and the Medal of Honor franchise.
His passion has always been to develop interactive applications that not only entertain, but inspire the players to learn something new about their world.
Who Created SMALLab?
SMALLab was developed over a period of several years by an interdisciplinary team of dedicated faculty and graduate students at Arizona State University's School of Arts, Media and Engineering. SMALLab is a product of the collaborative vision of these designers, educators, researchers, artists, engineers, computer scientists, psychologists, musicians, and dancers.
